Actor Srikanth Remanded to Judicial Custody in Drug Case Until July 7

Chennai:
Popular Tamil and Telugu actor Srikanth has been sent to judicial custody until July 7 in connection with a drug-related case, following his arrest by Chennai police. The actor was questioned for several hours at the Nungambakkam Police Station before being formally arrested.
According to police sources, Srikanth is accused of purchasing and consuming cocaine, and maintaining links with known drug peddlers. His blood samples tested positive for narcotic substances, confirming drug use.
The case surfaced during a broader investigation into a drug network exposed after a recent pub brawl involving a former AIADMK functionary. That incident led authorities to multiple suspects, eventually resulting in Srikanth’s arrest.
Srikanth, who made his debut with Roja Kootam in 2002, has acted in nearly 70 films, including the critically acclaimed Nanban, the Tamil remake of ‘Three Idiots’. His legal team has yet to issue an official statement.
The arrest comes amid heightened anti-drug operations in Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, have criticized the ruling DMK, alleging a deteriorating law-and-order situation. The DMK has rejected these claims, stating that the police actions reflect strong enforcement.
Tamil Nadu Police maintain that drug use in the state is among the lowest in the country, citing NCRB data, and assert that strict action is being taken against both users and traffickers.
In a recent interview with NDTV, DGP Shankar Jiwal noted that while Tamil Nadu is not a producer of narcotics, it is increasingly being used as a transit route for international drug trafficking, especially towards Sri Lanka and other destinations.
