Indian Man Arrested at Delhi Airport for Smuggling Heroin Worth Over ₹29 Crore

New Delhi: In a major drug bust, customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport detained an Indian national on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin worth over ₹29 crore into the country. The arrest highlights the relentless efforts of customs authorities to curb drug trafficking through international transit points.

The accused, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was intercepted by officials upon his arrival from Bangkok via Kuala Lumpur on November 9. Acting on intelligence inputs, customs officers flagged him for a thorough search, suspecting that he might be involved in illicit activities.

According to a statement released by the customs department, a meticulous inspection of the man’s luggage led to the discovery of a significant quantity of narcotics. “During the baggage search, officials uncovered a white-colored narcotic substance concealed within seven green polythene packets. The total weight of the substance, excluding packaging material, amounted to approximately 7.321 kg,” the statement confirmed.

The concealed heroin, found hidden inside the man’s trolley bag, was swiftly confiscated by customs authorities. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be over ₹29 crore, making it one of the largest drug hauls in recent months at the Delhi airport.

Officials revealed that the suspect had traveled on a circuitous route, arriving from Bangkok with a layover in Kuala Lumpur, likely to evade detection. However, vigilant customs officials, aided by intelligence and profiling techniques, were able to identify the suspicious passenger and conduct a timely search.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the individual may be part of a larger international drug trafficking syndicate, with authorities now probing his connections to other operatives. The customs department is working closely with narcotics control agencies to trace the origins and intended recipients of the smuggled drugs.

Authorities are treating this case with high priority, emphasizing the growing challenge of tackling drug smuggling through sophisticated networks. “This seizure is not just a significant catch but also a testament to our strengthened vigilance at major airports,” said an official from the customs department.

As the investigation unfolds, officials are hopeful that this arrest will help unravel a broader drug trafficking network that has been using India as a transit hub. The accused has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing detailed interrogation. Further arrests are anticipated based on the information gathered during questioning.

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by customs and law enforcement agencies to tighten security and prevent the influx of illicit substances into the country, safeguarding citizens from the dangers of drug abuse.
