Governor Defies Mamata Banerjee’s Plea, Heads to Violence-Hit Murshidabad to Assess Ground Reality

Despite West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s public appeal to delay the visit, Governor CV Ananda Bose is set to travel to Murshidabad on Thursday night to personally assess the situation in the riot-affected district.
Sources at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata confirmed that the Governor plans to spend the night at the District Circuit House and will visit various affected areas on Friday morning. Murshidabad, a minority-dominated district, has been grappling with unrest throughout the week following violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Earlier in the day, Mamata Banerjee addressed media personnel, urging the Governor to wait until peace is fully restored in the region. “I could have visited Murshidabad, but refrained, as my presence might prompt others to follow. Even the West Bengal Commission for Women wanted to go, but I asked them to wait a few more days,” she said. The Chief Minister also stated that she would only visit once normalcy is completely restored.
In parallel, Supratim Sarkar, ADG Law & Order (South Bengal range), stated on Thursday evening that authorities will assess whether there was any lapse in intelligence leading up to the outbreak of violence. He added that 60 FIRs have been registered, with 274 arrests made so far.
Sarkar assured that steps are being taken to help displaced residents return home, noting that 75 individuals have already been safely brought back. “We’re committed to ensuring peace and safety. Police and CAPF camps are in place, so there’s no need for panic,” he said.
The Governor’s decision to proceed with the visit despite political friction underscores the urgency of the situation on the ground and the need for swift reassurance to affected communities.
