Fire Breaks Out at Income Tax Office Building in Mumbai’s Churchgate

Mumbai: A fire broke out in the basement of Aayakar Bhavan, the seven-storey Income Tax Office building on Maharshi Karve Road in Mumbai’s Churchgate area, on Monday afternoon.
According to officials, the Mumbai Fire Brigade received a call about the fire at around 2:01 pm. Thick smoke was seen rising from the building, with the fumes spreading to several floors above the basement.
Evacuation Underway
Emergency teams began evacuating people from the upper floors of the building as a precaution.
So far, no injuries or casualties have been reported, officials said.
The building consists of a basement, a ground floor and seven upper floors, making the evacuation operation a priority as firefighters work to contain the blaze.
Multiple Agencies Respond
Several emergency and civic agencies rushed to the scene after the fire was reported.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, BEST, ambulance services and civic officials are involved in the response.
At least four fire engines, along with several other firefighting vehicles, have been deployed at the site.
Specialised rescue equipment, including a turntable ladder and an aerial ladder platform, is also being used to help emergency personnel evacuate occupants from the upper floors.

Firefighters are continuing efforts to bring the blaze under control, while officials assess the extent of the damage.
The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inspection once the firefighting operation is complete to determine how the fire started and whether the building suffered structural or other damage.
