ED Searches TMC MP Nadimul Haque’s Premises in Case Linked to Newspaper Operations

New Delhi | September 7, 2026: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday carried out searches at multiple premises linked to senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mohammad Nadimul Haque as part of an investigation connected to the operations of an Urdu-language newspaper.

According to sources, the searches began in the early morning and were conducted at locations in Delhi, Kolkata and Ranchi. The action is reportedly linked to M/s Akhbar-E-Mashriq Pvt. Ltd., the company associated with the publication of the Urdu daily Akhbar-E-Mashriq. Haque is understood to be a director of the company.

The searches are part of an investigation being conducted under the country’s anti-money laundering law. Officials are examining the financial and operational aspects of the newspaper company as they look into allegations that prompted the case.

Investigation Follows Police FIR

Sources said the ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) after taking note of an FIR registered by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

The case reportedly involves allegations concerning the publication and circulation of material that authorities believe could promote communal disharmony.

Alongside these allegations, investigators are also examining claims relating to financial transactions associated with the newspaper’s operations. These include allegations of illegal transactions, unaccounted cash dealings and funds allegedly received from suspicious sources.

The ED searches are aimed at gathering documents and other material that could help investigators establish the financial trail and determine whether any provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act have been violated.

Multiple Locations Under Search

The simultaneous searches in Delhi, Kolkata and Ranchi indicate that investigators are examining activities and financial links across different locations.

During such searches, ED officials typically examine financial records, company documents, electronic devices and other material that may be relevant to the investigation. The exact nature of the material recovered during Monday’s operation, however, was not immediately clear.

Officials have not yet indicated whether the searches will lead to further questioning, summons or other action against individuals connected with the company.

Haque’s Political Background

Mohammad Nadimul Haque is a senior Trinamool Congress leader and serves as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He is also regarded as a close associate of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

The ED action against a sitting Rajya Sabha member is likely to attract political attention, particularly as investigations involving opposition leaders and agencies such as the ED have frequently become a point of political debate.

However, the searches themselves do not establish guilt. The allegations being examined by the agency will have to be supported by evidence, and the investigation is still underway.

Financial Trail Under Scanner

At the centre of the investigation is the financial and operational functioning of Akhbar-E-Mashriq Pvt. Ltd. Investigators are expected to examine the company’s accounts, sources of funds and transactions to determine whether money was allegedly routed through unlawful or unexplained channels.

The ED’s investigation stems from the allegations mentioned in the police case, including claims involving suspicious funding and cash transactions. Officials are now working to establish whether these transactions have any connection with the alleged offences under investigation.

Further details are expected to emerge as the searches continue and investigators analyse the documents and digital material collected from the premises.

For now, the case remains under investigation, and any further action against Haque or others associated with the newspaper company will depend on the evidence gathered by the Enforcement Directorate.
