Delhi Teen’s Body Found After Four-Day Search, Fell Into Open Drain While Chasing Kite

New Delhi: A four-day search for 15-year-old Mithun ended in tragedy on Tuesday after the Delhi teenager’s body was recovered from an open drain in southeast Delhi’s Jasola village.

Mithun, a Class 8 student, had gone missing around 11 am on Saturday while chasing a kite near his home. His family and authorities feared that he had accidentally fallen into the uncovered drain.

What followed was an intensive search operation involving the Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rescue teams and divers. Despite days of efforts, rescuers were unable to locate the teenager until Tuesday, when his body was finally recovered.

Mithun’s family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lives in the area and works as labourers in Delhi. His disappearance had left his family desperately searching for answers.

A video that circulated widely on social media showed Mithun’s father searching inside the drain himself, holding a stick as he desperately tried to find his son. The heartbreaking footage highlighted the family’s anguish as the official search continued.

The incident has also triggered questions over civic safety and the condition of open drains in the capital.

Following the tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended a junior engineer from the South East (Central) Zone, citing alleged dereliction of duty. The civic body said disciplinary proceedings would also be initiated against the official.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the teenager’s death and reportedly directed the Chief Secretary to establish which agency was responsible for the drain. She also ordered action against the official found responsible.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the dangers posed by uncovered drains, particularly in residential areas where children and pedestrians can be exposed to serious risks.

For Mithun’s family, however, the official action comes after an unbearable four days of hope, fear and searching — ending with the heartbreaking recovery of their son.
