Anil Ambani Faces Fresh Fraud Cases as CBI Tightens Probe Into Reliance Group Loans

Industrialist Anil Ambani is facing mounting legal scrutiny after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered multiple fraud cases linked to loans taken by Reliance Communications and other group entities.

According to investigators, several banks and financial institutions have alleged that thousands of crores in loan funds were diverted through shell companies, related-party transactions and allegedly manipulated financial records. The CBI has accused company officials of conspiracy, cheating and financial misconduct, while searches have been carried out at locations connected to Ambani and Reliance Communications.

One of the major cases involves an alleged loss of more than ₹2,220 crore to Bank of Baroda. Investigators claim that loan money was diverted through fictitious transactions and that the company’s financial position was misrepresented.

In another case, the CBI registered an FIR based on a complaint from Life Insurance Corporation of India, alleging wrongful losses of around ₹3,750 crore. The agency claims LIC was persuaded to invest in Reliance Communications’ debentures through misleading representations about the company’s financial health and security cover.

The agency has also questioned Ambani in connection with an alleged ₹2,929 crore fraud case linked to State Bank of India, where investigators are examining claims of fund diversion and misuse of loan proceeds.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over delays in investigations involving the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) and has directed agencies including the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to conduct time-bound and coordinated probes into alleged financial irregularities worth tens of thousands of crores.

The investigations are ongoing, and no court has yet ruled on the allegations. Ambani and the companies involved have previously stated that they are cooperating with investigating agencies.
