“More Than I Ever Dreamt”: Pat Cummins Reacts After Reaching 300 Test Wickets in WTC Final

Australia’s Test captain and pace spearhead Pat Cummins celebrated a major career milestone during the ICC World Test Championship Final, expressing heartfelt gratitude after taking his 300th Test wicket. “It’s way more than I could have asked for,” said Cummins, who also claimed an incredible 6 for 28 against South Africa at Lord’s on Day 2.
Cummins, now the eighth Australian bowler to join the elite 300-wicket club in Tests, reached the milestone with his 14th five-wicket haul, helping bowl out South Africa for just 138 in 57.1 overs. His performance gave Australia a solid 74-run lead in the first innings — putting them firmly in control to potentially retain their WTC title.
Reflecting on the achievement, Cummins acknowledged the journey:
“Three hundred is a really big number. I’ve battled a few injuries and niggles over the years, but I’ve managed to play well in different conditions. I’m pretty happy.”
Adding to his list of records, Cummins also became the first fast-bowling captain since 1982 to take a five-for at the historic Lord’s ground. During the ongoing 2023–25 WTC cycle, he’s been in red-hot form — collecting 79 wickets at an impressive average of 23.03.
Speaking about the pitch conditions, Cummins noted that while the ball softened over time, it still offered opportunities:
“It feels like if you bowl well, it’s tough to score runs. There’s something in it for both batters and bowlers.”
With this performance, Cummins not only hit a personal high but also put his team in prime position to defeat South Africa and continue Australia’s dominance in the World Test Championship.
