Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Brings his Wisdom to NLU Delhi as a Distinguished Professor

In a meaningful new chapter, Dr. Justice D Y Chandrachud, the former Chief Justice of India, has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor at the National Law University (NLU), Delhi. After stepping down in November 2024 following his two-year tenure as the 50th Chief Justice, Chandrachud continues to inspire through his dedication to justice and progressive outlook in the judiciary.

NLU Delhi announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their deep honor in welcoming him. The university shared a heartfelt message along with a photo of Justice Chandrachud alongside NLU Vice-Chancellor G S Bajpai. Bajpai described this partnership as a “transformative chapter” in Indian legal education, emphasizing how Chandrachud’s presence will significantly enrich the academic community and mentor future legal minds.

As part of his role, Chandrachud will guide the university in establishing a Center for Constitutional Studies, where his extensive knowledge of constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and the interpretation of fundamental rights will be put to impactful use for research and learning.

To engage students and the broader legal community, NLU Delhi will also launch the “In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series” this July. This initiative aims to explore pressing legal challenges through the lens of Chandrachud’s influential jurisprudence.

Chandrachud’s time on the Supreme Court, beginning in 2016, was marked by pivotal cases and landmark rulings — from the Ayodhya land dispute to decriminalizing same-sex relations, protecting the right to privacy, and reviewing the constitutional status of Article 370. His judicial journey spans decades, from his early days as a judge at the Bombay High Court in 2000 to serving as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013. His career reflects a deep commitment to justice, social change, and progressive ideals.

NLU Delhi sees his appointment as a reaffirmation of their mission to blend theoretical knowledge with social impact, shaping a new generation of legal professionals who value both knowledge and justice.
