Indian-Origin Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Deadly Drunk Driving Crash in New York

Amandeep Singh’s Reckless Actions Claim Lives of Two Teenagers

Amandeep Singh, a 36-year-old Indian-origin construction executive, has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for causing a tragic car crash that killed two teenagers in Long Island, New York. Singh was driving under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at a speed of 150 kmph when he crashed into a car carrying 14-year-old Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein on May 3, 2023.

A Tragic Night in Long Island

On that fateful night, both boys were returning from a tennis tournament victory dinner when Singh’s pickup truck, speeding at 95 mph (150 kmph) in a 40 mph zone, collided with their vehicle. The impact was devastating, killing Ethan and Drew instantly and injuring two other teenagers.

Singh’s blood alcohol level was found to be .15, nearly twice the legal limit. A bottle of tequila was also recovered from his truck. After the crash, Singh fled the scene and was found hiding behind a dumpster at a nearby shopping center. Prosecutors reported that he was so intoxicated he believed he was in New Jersey.

Courtroom Drama and Emotional Testimonies

The sentencing hearing was emotional, with the courtroom packed with tearful friends and family members. Drew’s father, Mitch Hassenbein, expressed his grief, saying, “Instead of picking up my son at school, I had to identify him at the morgue. It’s inhuman torture.”

Singh, who initially pleaded not guilty, later accepted full responsibility, calling his actions “the epitome of stupidity and selfishness.” He expressed remorse in court, saying, “Losing a child is the greatest grief. If anyone should have died, it should have been me.”

No Reduced Sentence

Singh was sentenced to eight-and-a-third to 25 years in prison without any plea deal or reduced sentence. Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly emphasized that Singh’s actions were reckless and devastating, leaving two families shattered.

Lasting Impact

As Singh begins his prison term, the community continues to mourn the loss of two young lives cut short by one man’s reckless choices. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of impaired driving.
