🇮🇳 Gambhir Calls For “Special Effort” As India Prepare For T20 World Cup Semi-Final Clash With England

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised Sanju Samson for his match-winning performance against the West Indies cricket team, but warned that India will need a “special effort” to overcome England cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final.
India secured their place in the last four after Samson delivered a stunning unbeaten 97 off just 50 balls, guiding the defending champions to a five-wicket win while chasing a challenging target of 196 at Eden Gardens on Sunday. The thrilling victory was witnessed by a packed crowd of nearly 67,000 fans.
Samson had only featured once during the group stage — scoring 22 against Namibia — as India mostly preferred a left-handed opening combination of Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma. However, the team management brought Samson back into the playing XI during the Super Eight stage against Zimbabwe to add a right-handed option at the top.
Although he managed only 24 runs in that game, Gambhir remained confident in his abilities and continued backing him for the crucial clash against the West Indies — a decision that paid off handsomely.
Speaking after the match, Gambhir said Samson had finally shown the full range of his talent.
“We all know how good a player Sanju is,” Gambhir said. “It was about trusting him and backing him when the team needed him the most. Today he showed what he is capable of.”
India will now travel to Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for Thursday’s semi-final against England.
England, led by Harry Brook, have been in strong form throughout the Super Eight stage, winning all their matches and gaining momentum as the tournament approaches its final stages.
Gambhir acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing England as a high-quality side filled with dangerous players.
“They are a world-class team with plenty of quality players,” Gambhir said. “Playing at Wankhede will bring different conditions compared to Kolkata, and that means new challenges for us.”
Despite the tough contest ahead, Gambhir believes the semi-final presents a major opportunity for the Indian team.
“It’s another chance for the team to do something special for the country. We just need to play our best cricket and make sure we tick all the boxes.”
He added that India will need to deliver their absolute best if they hope to reach next Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.
“To beat a team like England, we will need a special effort,” Gambhir said.
