₹24,000 Crore Infrastructure Push to Decongest Delhi’s Traffic

In a major step to ease Delhi’s long-standing traffic woes, the Centre and Delhi government have approved nine massive infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore. These initiatives aim to slash travel time, reduce pollution, and streamline daily commutes across Delhi-NCR.
The approved projects include a combination of tunnels, flyovers, new roads, and metro extensions. Construction will begin in phases this year, with all projects targeted for completion by 2027.
Among the key developments is a 12.3-km extension of the Pink Line Metro from Majlis Park to Maujpur, which will complete the circular route and function as a metro ring road. This will allow seamless travel across the capital without needing to change lines or use surface roads.
In South Delhi, an elevated corridor connecting AIIMS and Mahipalpur Bypass has been approved to ease the heavily congested route to the airport. This will benefit thousands of commuters traveling between South Extension, Dhaula Kuan, and IGI Airport.
Additionally, a 5-km tunnel from Shiv Murti to Vasant Kunj will connect NH-48 to Vasant Kunj and Mahipalpur, significantly improving traffic flow in one of the city’s most congested areas.
Outer Delhi will witness the construction of flyovers and underpasses along the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and Gurugram-Jaipur Highway to facilitate smoother movement of heavy vehicles. New road links between Rohini, Narela, and Bawana are also planned to improve access to expanding residential and industrial hubs.
To relieve the burden on the Delhi-Noida corridor, additional underpasses and service roads will be developed near the DND Flyway, aiming to ease peak-hour congestion.
Redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station is also part of the plan. While passenger amenities will be upgraded, a core focus will be reorganizing vehicular movement outside the station, which is a major traffic bottleneck.
Plans also include better connectivity to major expressways. Infrastructure upgrades will enhance links to the Delhi-Katra Expressway and improve access points for long-distance travelers.
Travel to the airport will also become smoother, with new road and tunnel projects around IGI Airport improving access to Aerocity and Mahipalpur.
The ₹24,000 crore funding will be jointly managed by the central and Delhi governments. Planning and tendering have already begun, with construction expected to start in several areas by early next year.
