Young Mother Dies by Suicide in Karnataka After Alleged Abuse by In-Laws, Police Arrest Three

A 22-year-old woman from Karnataka’s Bidar district has died by suicide, with her family alleging that prolonged harassment, abuse, and pressure from her husband’s family drove her to take the step.
The woman, Anjanabai Shekhar Patil, was found dead at her home in Om Colony in Basavakalyan town. She had married Shekhar Patil in 2022, and the couple had an 11-month-old baby.
According to police, a case was registered after a complaint from Anjanabai’s father, Vijaykumar, who alleged that his daughter faced daily physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her in-laws. He also claimed that she had been forced and pressured into prostitution and was assaulted when she refused.
Family members say the continued harassment caused severe mental distress, leaving her feeling trapped and helpless in her situation.
Following the complaint, police booked three people, including her husband Shekhar Patil and two of his relatives. All three accused are currently in custody, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they gather evidence and record statements.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the issue of domestic violence and the intense pressures some women face within abusive households, often with devastating consequences.
