World Chess Champion D Gukesh Expresses Gratitude After Receiving Khel Ratna Award

World Chess Champion D Gukesh, whose remarkable achievements made him a sports icon in 2024, expressed his gratitude after receiving the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award from President Draupadi Murmu. The ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday, honoring several athletes for their outstanding contributions to Indian sports.

Taking to Instagram, the 18-year-old chess prodigy shared his emotions, saying, “Grateful to receive the prestigious ‘Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award 2024’ from our Honourable @presidentofindia ma’am! It feels great and encouraging when our hard work and achievements get proper recognition.”

Gukesh’s historic year was highlighted by his victory over China’s Ding Liren in the decisive 14th game of the FIDE World Championship held in Singapore. His win secured a 7.5-6.5 victory, making him the youngest World Chess Champion at just 18 and India’s second-ever champion after Viswanathan Anand.

The awards ceremony also celebrated the achievements of other sports stars. Double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, who became the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal, secured bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event and in the mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh.

Para-athlete Praveen Kumar brought home a gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 category at the Paralympics, while Indian men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh led his team to a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics and earned a nomination for FIH Player of the Year.

The awards marked a proud moment for Indian sports, showcasing the dedication and talent of athletes across various disciplines.
