“Why Can’t He Resign?” Gautam Gambhir Called Out As ‘Hypocrite’ Ahead Of Asia Cup

Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary has once again targeted India head coach Gautam Gambhir, this time over the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, where India and Pakistan are set to face off despite ongoing political tensions.

Tiwary criticised Gambhir as a “hypocrite,” pointing out that before becoming coach, Gambhir had repeatedly said that India should not play cricket against Pakistan. Now, however, he is set to lead the team in a high-profile India–Pakistan clash.

“I always felt he’s someone who is a hypocrite. When he wasn’t coach, he said India and Pakistan should never play. What will he do now? Why can’t he just resign and say he won’t be part of a team that plays Pakistan?” Tiwary said in an interview with CricTracker.

Following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, Gambhir reiterated his personal view that India should not play Pakistan. At the time, he clarified that the final decision rests with the government and the BCCI, not him.

“My personal opinion is absolutely no. But ultimately, it’s for the government and the BCCI to decide. No cricket match, Bollywood film or concert is more important than the life of Indian soldiers and citizens. Matches will keep happening, but nothing compares to losing a loved one,” Gambhir had said earlier.

Despite his stance, Gambhir also stressed that the issue should not be politicised, adding that the team will abide by whatever decision authorities take.

The Asia Cup 2025 will be Gambhir’s first white-ball tournament as head coach following India’s Champions Trophy victory. In the group stage, India will face Pakistan, Oman and hosts UAE. If both India and Pakistan advance, the two sides could meet up to three times within just two weeks.
