Ukrainian Journalist Tortured, Had Organs Removed In Russian Custody

Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna, known for her fearless reporting from Russian-occupied territories, was brutally tortured and killed while in Russian custody, a new investigation has revealed. She was just 27.
Roshchyna disappeared in 2023 while covering the illegal detention and torture of civilians in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region. Months later, her body was returned to Ukraine. What forensic experts discovered was chilling: signs of extensive torture—abrasions, hemorrhages, a broken rib, neck injuries, and possible electric shocks to her feet.
Even more disturbing was the fact that several of her organs—including her brain, trachea, and eyes—were missing. Ukrainian war crimes investigators suggest this may have been a deliberate attempt by Russian forces to cover up the real cause of her death.
“She was the only journalist who made it her mission to report from occupied areas,” said Sevgil Musaieva, editor-in-chief of Ukrainska Pravda, where Roshchyna worked. Her colleagues described her as deeply committed to her work—always at the heart of where her country needed her most.
The Committee to Protect Journalists strongly condemned her killing, placing responsibility squarely on Russia. Ukrainian officials are also demanding stronger global response to the growing crisis of citizens being held without charges in Russian-controlled zones.
“This isn’t just about one journalist,” said foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhy. “Thousands of Ukrainian civilians are being held hostage by Russia. The world must act.”
Meanwhile, the war rages on. Russia launched fresh drone and missile attacks on Kharkiv and Dnipro, leaving one dead and dozens injured. Amid escalating violence, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Vladimir Putin wanted peace, but many Ukrainians are mourning yet another voice silenced in the fight for truth.
