UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Visits Mumbai’s Iconic Khyber Restaurant in Kala Ghoda

Mumbai: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, currently on a two-day visit to India, took time out from his busy schedule to enjoy local cuisine at Mumbai’s famed Khyber restaurant in the Kala Ghoda neighbourhood.
The restaurant shared a picture with Starmer on Instagram, captioning it: “The British Prime Minister’s visit to Khyber marks a proud milestone for Mumbai’s dining legacy.” Founded by Sudheer Bahl and now led by his son Ishaan Bahl, Khyber has become a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage and world-class hospitality.
A Historic Culinary Landmark
Established in 1958 as a modest 25–40 seater in Kala Ghoda, Khyber gradually expanded into the entire building. A major setback came in 1985 when a fire forced the restaurant to close temporarily. It reopened in 1988 after a revamp in partnership with Parmeshwar Godrej, evolving into a sprawling 7,000-square-foot haveli-style space. The restaurant is celebrated for its rustic ambience and authentic North-West Frontier and Mughlai cuisine.
Timeless Menu
Khyber’s menu has remained remarkably consistent over the decades, with signature dishes like slow-cooked raan, tandoori rotis, and creamy maa ki dal delighting generations of diners. Other classics include Spiced Chicken Broth, Mirch Ka Salan, Dhaba Gosht, Methi Malai Mutter, and Prawns Mughlai. Newer creations such as Beetroot Galouti Kebabs and Smoked Butter Chicken blend seamlessly with the traditional favourites. Notably, around 80% of the core menu has remained unchanged for over 30 years.
“Our head chef hasn’t retired yet,” Sudheer Bahl told Mid-day. “When he does, his son will step in. We hold on to our people. Our kitchen doesn’t turn over, it turns tradition into legacy.”
Dining at Khyber
While Khyber accepts walk-ins, reservations are recommended, especially during dinner and weekends, to ensure a smooth dining experience. The restaurant continues to be a must-visit destination for locals and visitors eager to experience Mumbai’s culinary legacy.
Keir Starmer’s visit highlights not just the city’s vibrant food culture but also Khyber’s enduring status as one of Mumbai’s most iconic dining destinations.
