Two Indian Women Caught in Changi Airport Theft Case, Face Jail Term if Convicted

Singapore –
A routine transit through one of the world’s most secure airports turned into a legal nightmare for two Indian women, aged 29 and 30, after they were detained for allegedly stealing items from several shops inside Changi Airport’s Terminal 3 on June 2.
According to Singaporean police, the women were in the departure transit area when the airport’s security team sprang into action following a theft complaint. Thanks to CCTV surveillance, both women were identified and tracked down within an hour—before they could board their next flight.
Among the items recovered from them were a purse, a backpack, and a bottle of perfume, valued at around SGD 635 (approximately ₹39,000). All items were reportedly stolen from different retail stores in the terminal.
The women are scheduled to appear in court on June 10, and if convicted, could face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.
In a statement issued after the incident, the Singapore Police reiterated their zero-tolerance approach to theft, especially in highly sensitive zones like international airports. “We will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft,” the statement added.
Changi Airport, known globally for its tight security and advanced surveillance, rarely sees such incidents go unnoticed. This episode serves as a reminder that even minor crimes in transit zones can have serious legal consequences, especially in countries with strict law enforcement like Singapore.
