Trump Confronts Bezos Over Amazon’s Plan to Show Tariff Impact on Prices

Tensions are rising between the White House and Amazon after reports emerged that the retail giant considered displaying the impact of U.S. tariffs on product prices. President Donald Trump reportedly called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express his displeasure over the move, which the administration views as politically motivated.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt strongly criticised the idea, calling it a “hostile and political act.” She argued that the company is intentionally trying to undermine the administration’s trade policies. “Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” she asked.
At the heart of the issue are Trump’s new tariffs on Chinese imports, which stand at a staggering 145%. The move has rattled many of Amazon’s third-party sellers, many of whom rely on affordable goods from China. Sellers are now weighing whether to raise prices, skip Amazon’s major sales events like Prime Day, or absorb the extra costs themselves.
According to Punchbowl News, Amazon was considering displaying tariff charges next to product prices on its site. However, the company later denied this. Tim Doyle, a spokesperson for Amazon, clarified: “The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen.”
Still, the controversy continues to brew. Other retailers such as Temu and Shein, which ship directly from China, have already started adding the 145% import charges to customer totals. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged that the tariffs present a challenge, noting that while some third-party sellers might pass on the costs to customers, Amazon is working to mitigate the impact through strategic measures like bulk inventory purchases and renegotiating supplier terms.
The incident has also reignited curiosity about the relationship between President Trump and Jeff Bezos. Bezos had previously donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration, but when asked if this recent conflict points to a fallout between the two billionaires, Leavitt simply said, “I will not speak to the president’s relationships with Jeff Bezos.”
