Trapped by Flames: Chinese Student Suffers 90% Burns After Roommate’s E-Bike Battery Explodes

A tragic incident in central China has left a young student fighting for his life after his roommate’s negligence turned a shared apartment into a fiery trap. Du Junhao, a third-year student at Wuhan City College, suffered severe burns covering 90% of his body and critical damage to his respiratory tract after an electric bike battery caught fire in their flat.
The heartbreaking accident occurred when Du and his roommate, Li Jiajun, were renting an apartment while juggling studies and part-time jobs. Despite repeated warnings from Du, Li continued to charge his rented e-bike battery indoors — a risky habit that turned deadly.
One early morning, at around 6 a.m., the battery exploded, releasing toxic smoke and fire. Li, who slept closer to the door, managed to escape. But in a shocking twist, surveillance footage revealed Li shutting the door behind him as he fled — unknowingly locking Du inside.
Du was trapped for nearly 30 seconds — long enough for the blaze to ravage his body. He sustained life-threatening burns, lost two fingers, and was unable to speak for months due to damage to his lungs. The accident has since cost his family over Rs 3.2 crore in medical bills, though support from online donors has helped raise most of the needed funds.
At one point, Du considered giving up, but his family’s relentless love and sacrifices inspired him to keep fighting. “My life is not just mine,” he said, a sentiment that has touched hearts across the country.
Li Jiajun has been arrested and charged with negligence causing injury, a crime that could lead to up to three years in prison.
The incident has reignited conversations in China about e-bike safety and the importance of responsibility in shared living spaces.
