Tensions Rise as Iran Warns U.S. Over Potential Israeli Strike Ahead of Nuclear Talks

Iran has issued a strong warning to the United States, declaring it would hold Washington responsible for any Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. The statement came just before a new round of U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations is set to begin.

The warning followed a CNN report citing unnamed U.S. officials who said Israel was preparing to potentially target Iranian nuclear sites, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made Iran’s position clear in a letter to the United Nations, saying, “We believe that in the event of any attack on the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the Zionist regime, the U.S. government will also be involved and bear legal responsibility.”

He added that Iran would respond “decisively” to any threats or illegal actions from Israel, which it refers to as the “Zionist regime.”

These tensions are flaring as high-level nuclear talks resume between Tehran and Washington. The fifth round of negotiations, mediated by Oman, is scheduled to take place in Rome on Friday. The talks represent the most direct contact between the two sides since the U.S. exited the 2015 nuclear agreement under President Donald Trump in 2018.

The American delegation includes Steve Witkoff, a close ally of Trump, and Michael Anton, head of policy planning at the State Department. One of the most contentious issues in the talks remains uranium enrichment. While the 2015 deal allowed Iran to enrich uranium to 3.67% for peaceful energy use, Iran is now enriching to 60%, edging closer to the 90% level needed for weapons-grade material.

President Trump recently claimed that Iran had accepted some key conditions, asserting that his approach could prevent war. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the U.S. would not accept any enrichment capability for Iran. “That ultimately makes them a threshold nuclear power,” he warned.

Sanctions continue to be another major hurdle. Rubio emphasized that penalties imposed on Iran over its ballistic missile program and terrorism-related activities would stay in place even if a new deal is reached.

Amid the rising rhetoric, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Ali Mohammad Naini warned of a “devastating” response if Israel were to strike. “If the delusional Zionist regime commits a foolish act, it will definitely receive a decisive response in its small and vulnerable geography,” he said.

Adding to the pressure, Iran unveiled three new military drones, including a kamikaze drone, signaling continued investment in defense capabilities.

On the ground, support for Iran’s nuclear program remains strong. Demonstrators gathered near the Fordow enrichment site waving flags and chanting, “Nuclear energy is our inalienable right” and “No compromise, no surrender, only confrontation with America.”

As the U.S. and Iran head back to the negotiating table, the stakes have rarely been higher, with diplomatic hopes balanced precariously against military threats and deep-seated mistrust.
