Tensions in Manipur: Protesters Clash with Police, Superintendent Injured in Kangpokpi

Fresh unrest erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Friday as protesters demanding the withdrawal of central forces from Saibol village clashed with police, leaving several injured, including the Superintendent of Police (SP), Manoj Prabhakar. The tensions stem from allegations of a baton charge on women by security forces in Saibol on December 31.
Protesters, organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), enforced an economic blockade and attempted to halt transport in the area. When security personnel intervened to disperse the crowd, tensions escalated, and a mob attacked the SP’s office, pelting stones and petrol bombs. Several vehicles parked within the office compound were also damaged.
Witnesses reported armed individuals on the streets, adding to the volatile situation. Despite efforts by security forces to control the crowd, the protest intensified as hundreds gathered outside the SP’s office, refusing to leave until their demands were met.
Manipur Police stated that adequate force was used to disperse the mob and restore order. SP Manoj Prabhakar, who sustained injuries during the clash, received medical treatment and is now leading efforts to stabilize the situation. Additional central forces have been deployed to maintain peace in the district.
This unrest highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with locals expressing frustration over the continued presence of central forces in Saibol and neighboring areas.
