Supreme Court Denies Bail to Former Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna in Rape and Sexual Assault Case

The Supreme Court has refused to grant bail to former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault. This decision comes after the Karnataka High Court had previously denied his bail request on October 21, citing concerns that his influential position might enable him to tamper with evidence.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, upheld the High Court’s ruling, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations. Despite arguments from senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who highlighted that section 376 (rape) of the IPC was not included in the initial complaint, the court chose not to intervene.

The accusations against Prajwal Revanna, son of JD(S) MLA H D Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, have gained significant attention following the leak of explicit videos earlier this year. The controversy erupted just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections when videos allegedly involving Revanna began circulating online. These recordings, reportedly extracted from a pen drive, led to his suspension from the JD(S) and triggered multiple criminal cases.

According to the 2,144-page charge sheet filed by Karnataka’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), Revanna is accused of sexually assaulting a 47-year-old woman who had previously worked as a domestic help in his household. The case has also implicated his father, H D Revanna, as a co-accused. Despite multiple attempts to secure anticipatory bail, the courts have remained firm in their stance against Prajwal Revanna, given the gravity of the allegations and his potential influence over the investigation.
