SpiceJet’s Comeback on Track: Chairman Confident of Doubling Fleet Within a Year

SpiceJet is steadily bouncing back from past challenges, with Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh expressing strong optimism about the airline’s future. Speaking at a travel conclave in New Delhi, Singh said the carrier’s revival plan is “going very well” and that SpiceJet is on course to double its current fleet within the next year.

Earlier this year, the airline had announced plans to reintroduce 10 grounded aircraft—four of which are Boeing B737 Max—by mid-April. Since October 2024, SpiceJet has added 10 aircraft to its fleet, including three that were reactivated and seven brought in on lease.

The airline had previously faced a rough patch, battling financial woes and legal issues with lessors. But with fresh funding and strategic fleet expansion, SpiceJet seems to be gaining altitude once again.

As of January 10, out of a total fleet of 62 aircraft, 28 were operational. These included 20 Boeing B737s, six De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8s, and two Airbus A320s.

Addressing concerns about the potential impact of China’s reported ban on Boeing aircraft deliveries due to ongoing trade tensions with the US, Singh said the airline would engage with manufacturers to assess any possible advantages. “We don’t yet know how many aircraft were due for delivery to China, but to the extent we can benefit from the situation, we certainly will,” he added.

With renewed confidence and a clear plan in motion, SpiceJet appears to be preparing for smoother skies ahead.
