Shubman Gill Scores Century in First Match as India’s Test Captain, Joins Elite List with Kohli and Gavaskar

Shubman Gill made a sensational start to his captaincy journey, scoring a commanding unbeaten century on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. The 25-year-old’s knock of 102* marked his sixth Test hundred and just his second century in overseas conditions.
Gill’s innings not only silenced critics who questioned his record abroad but also etched his name in the history books. At 25 years and 285 days, he became the fourth youngest player in Test cricket history to score a hundred in his debut match as captain, following legends Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook, and Steven Smith.
Among Indians, Gill joined a rare club, becoming only the fourth player to hit a century in his first innings as Test captain. The others on the prestigious list include Vijay Hazare (164* vs England, 1951), Sunil Gavaskar (116 vs New Zealand, 1976), and Virat Kohli (115 vs Australia, 2014).
Gill’s appointment as Test skipper comes in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s retirement. With India entering a new era in Test cricket — marked by the departures of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and recently retired spinner Ravichandran Ashwin — Gill’s performance is being viewed as the start of a generational shift in leadership and strategy.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, speaking to ANI, emphasized the importance of Gill leading by example, likening his role to that of Kapil Dev during the 1983 World Cup. Yograj said Gill should aim for big scores — 100, 200, or even 300 — and carry the team forward with his leadership and consistency.
India, without several key veterans, is relying on young talent to claim its first Test series victory in England since 2007. Gill’s leadership and batting form could be the key to making that happen.
