Sharda University Student Dies by Suicide, Alleges Harassment by Faculty; Two Arrested
A second-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) student at Sharda University in Greater Noida allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on Friday night, citing mental harassment and humiliation by two faculty members. The incident triggered protests on campus, leading to the arrest of the accused staffers.
The student, identified as Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, left behind a suicide note naming two faculty members—Mahinder and Shairy—as responsible for her death. In the note, she accused them of prolonged mental harassment and requested they be sent to jail for what they had done. “I’ve been under stress for a long time because of them… I can’t live like this anymore. I’m sorry,” she wrote.
Following the incident, police registered a case at Knowledge Park Police Station in Gautam Buddha Nagar. The two faculty members have been arrested based on a complaint filed by Jyoti’s family. “A forensic team conducted a thorough examination of the room, and all legal formalities were carried out with the help of the family,” said Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar.
In response to the tragedy, Sharda University issued a statement confirming the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. “The university is cooperating fully with the authorities and has suspended the staff members in question,” said the Director of Public Relations.
The suicide has sparked widespread outrage among students. Late-night protests erupted at the university hostel, with students demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.
This case comes shortly after a similar incident in Odisha, where a student died after setting herself on fire, alleging sexual harassment by a college lecturer.
Jyoti Sharma’s body has been sent for a post-mortem, and a detailed investigation is currently underway. Authorities have assured the student’s family and classmates of a swift and impartial probe.
