Russia Offers 5% Discount On Oil To India Amid US Tariff Pressure

Russia has announced that it will continue supplying crude oil to India at a 5% discount, even as New Delhi faces mounting tariff pressure from the United States over its energy trade with Moscow.

Deputy Trade Representative of Russia to India, Evgeniy Griva, confirmed that oil imports will remain steady and that the discount margin is “around 5%, subject to negotiations.” He added that the pricing structure remains a commercial matter between businesses.

Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin reiterated that despite a “challenging situation,” Moscow has confidence in its energy ties with India and expects cooperation to remain strong.

The announcement comes after US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports, accusing New Delhi of indirectly funding Russia’s war in Ukraine by refining and re-exporting Russian crude. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro claimed India was serving as a “clearinghouse” for Russian oil, providing Moscow with critical dollar revenues.

India has slammed the US move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” warning that the tariffs could hurt sectors such as textiles, marine products, and leather. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained that India will not bow to external economic pressure.

Speaking at a press briefing, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the tariffs were part of Washington’s effort to put secondary pressure on Russia and accelerate an end to the Ukraine conflict.

The US has previously threatened sanctions on both Moscow and nations buying Russian crude. China and India remain the two largest buyers of Russian oil, making them key players in the global energy market amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
