Russia Earthquake, Tsunami LIVE Updates: Chile Raises Tsunami Warning to Highest Level After Massive Quake

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 struck Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves up to 4 meters high (about 13 feet), damaging infrastructure, and prompting evacuation alerts across parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States.

The epicenter was located roughly 119 kilometers (74 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 180,000 people. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described the quake as “the strongest in decades” and confirmed that a kindergarten building sustained damage from the tremors.

The first tsunami wave hit Severo-Kurilsk, the main town in Russia’s Kuril Islands, according to regional Governor Valery Limarenko. Waves measuring between 3 to 4 meters were also reported along various parts of the Kamchatka coastline.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency recorded a 30-centimeter (about 1 foot) tsunami in Nemuro, on the eastern coast of Hokkaido. The seismic event also prompted tsunami warnings in several Pacific nations, including the United States (Alaska and Hawaii), Chile, Mexico, the Solomon Islands, and New Zealand. Coastal areas in Ecuador were also on alert, with waves exceeding 3 meters predicted in some regions.

Authorities across the Pacific region are monitoring the situation closely and have issued evacuation notices and alerts as needed.
