RG Kar Rape Case: Victim’s Father Overwhelmed After Court Convicts Accused

In a landmark judgment, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was found guilty of raping and murdering a 31-year-old doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The verdict, delivered by a Kolkata court, comes over five months after the victim’s tragic death on August 9 last year.

The victim’s father broke down in court as the judge upheld justice for his daughter, offering some solace to the grieving family. Expressing gratitude to the judiciary, he said the ruling reinforced his faith in the legal system. Roy was convicted under sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with sentencing scheduled for Monday.

Accused Denies Guilt

Throughout the trial, Roy maintained his innocence, claiming he had been falsely accused while the real culprits remained free. He even pointed to his rudraksh chain as evidence, stating it would have been broken had he committed the crime. However, the court rejected his defense and ordered him to remain in judicial custody until sentencing.

CBI Probe and Allegations of Corruption

The case also uncovered a parallel corruption investigation at RG Kar Medical College, led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A chargesheet filed in November implicated former principal Sandip Ghosh and others in financial irregularities. Ghosh, who was questioned in connection with the murder, underwent polygraph tests but was granted bail due to delays in the investigation.

Victim’s Family Criticizes CBI

The victim’s father voiced frustration with the CBI’s handling of the case, alleging a lack of satisfactory progress despite appeals to the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. He accused the agency of failing to answer critical questions but reaffirmed his trust in the judiciary to deliver justice.

As the family waits for the final sentencing, this case has brought to light deeper concerns about institutional accountability and the long road to justice.
