Renowned Namibian Businessman Killed by Lion While Camping at Luxury Lodge

In a heartbreaking incident from Namibia, a well-known businessman and conservation supporter, Bernd Kebbel, lost his life after being attacked by a lion while camping at a remote luxury lodge in the country’s northwest region.

The tragedy unfolded near the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Sesfontein area on May 30, where Mr. Kebbel was vacationing with his wife and close friends. According to Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, the fatal encounter occurred when Mr. Kebbel stepped out of his tent in the early hours to use the toilet. That’s when a lion lurking nearby ambushed and mauled him, said ministry spokesperson Ndeshipanda Hamunyela.

“By the time fellow campers responded and managed to drive the lion away, it was already too late,” the spokesperson added.

Authorities, including Namibian Police spokesperson Elifas Kuwinga, have since visited the scene and are in the process of compiling a detailed report on the incident. The lion involved in the attack was later put down on June 1 after officials determined that it posed an ongoing risk to both locals and tourists in the area.

Mr. Kebbel was not only a respected businessman — formerly the owner of Off-Road-Centre, a company selling safari vehicle accessories — but also a passionate conservationist and philanthropist, well regarded for his commitment to wildlife and community welfare.

The region where the tragedy occurred is famous for its desert-adapted lions, which survive in the harsh, arid terrain of northwestern Namibia. However, their shrinking food sources, exacerbated by drought, have increasingly brought them into conflict with humans. According to 2023 estimates, only about 60 adult lions and a dozen cubs remain in the area, with numbers steadily declining due to environmental pressures.

The incident has shocked the local and global conservation community, raising complex questions about the balance between eco-tourism and human-wildlife coexistence. For many, the death of Bernd Kebbel — a man who loved the wild — serves as a tragic reminder of both the beauty and danger of untamed nature.
