Ranbir Kapoor To Revive RK Studios Legacy With His Directorial Debut

In what could mark a new chapter for one of Indian cinema’s most iconic legacies, Ranbir Kapoor is reportedly all set to relaunch RK Studios — the legendary production house founded by his grandfather Raj Kapoor in 1948. The revival will coincide with Ranbir’s directorial debut, which is expected to be produced under the RK Films banner, signaling the return of one of Bollywood’s most revered family brands.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the Kapoor scion is keen to rebuild the creative and cultural essence of RK Films before re-establishing a new physical space for the studio in Mumbai.
“They’re not rushing to construct a studio just yet. The immediate goal is to revive the brand’s identity and creative presence. Eventually, they plan to create a space that houses the production office and a screening theatre,” an insider told the publication.
Projects Under The Revived Banner
Ranbir Kapoor’s first directorial venture will reportedly headline the relaunch of RK Films. In addition, two more projects are already in the pipeline under the iconic banner.
The first will reunite Ranbir Kapoor with Ayan Mukerji, his Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva director, marking their next collaboration after the 2022 blockbuster.
The second is the long-awaited Kishore Kumar biopic, to be directed by Anurag Basu, with Aamir Khan reportedly in talks to play the legendary singer. Sources suggest that both projects are in advanced stages of discussion.
A trade analyst quoted in the report said:
“Ranbir wants to carry forward the RK legacy, but with a modern, creative approach. It’s an emotional project for him, but there’s still a lot of groundwork before it becomes official.”
The Legacy And The Loss
RK Studios, located in Chembur, Mumbai, was synonymous with cinematic history for decades, producing timeless classics such as Awaara, Shree 420, and Mera Naam Joker.
However, in May 2019, the property was acquired by Godrej Properties, after the Kapoor family made the difficult decision to part with it.
Ranbir’s uncle, Randhir Kapoor, had revealed in an interview with The Quint:
“No actor wants to travel to Chembur to shoot anymore — they prefer Film City. It was a painful decision, but we had no choice. The 2017 fire had already caused immense damage.”
The last film produced under the RK Films banner was Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), starring Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai.
A Legacy Reimagined
The revival of RK Studios marks not just a professional milestone for Ranbir Kapoor, but also a deeply personal journey — an attempt to reconnect with the cinematic heritage of the Kapoor family while reshaping it for a new generation of storytellers.
With his directorial debut under the same emblem that once defined Indian cinema, Ranbir appears ready to blend nostalgia with new-age storytelling, breathing life back into a brand that has stood as a symbol of Bollywood’s golden era.
