Rajpal Yadav Granted Interim Bail In ₹9-Crore Cheque Bounce Case By Delhi High Court

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in a ₹9-crore cheque bounce case that led to his recent incarceration at Tihar Jail.
The 54-year-old actor had borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his 2012 directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s poor box office performance resulted in significant financial losses. Over time, unpaid dues, dishonoured cheques, interest, and penalties caused the total liability to rise to nearly ₹9 crore.
After several cheques issued by Yadav reportedly bounced, criminal proceedings were initiated against him under the Negotiable Instruments Act. In April 2018, a magisterial court sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019.
Earlier this month, on February 5, Yadav surrendered before authorities and began serving his sentence after the High Court rejected his requests for additional time to settle the dues. The court had previously expressed concern over repeated breaches of payment undertakings.
However, on Monday, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma granted interim suspension of his sentence after noting that Yadav deposited ₹1.5 crore into the complainant’s account. The court clarified that the relief would remain in effect until the next date of hearing.
As part of the bail conditions, Yadav has been directed to surrender his passport and not leave the country without prior permission. He must also appear, either physically or virtually, at the next hearing scheduled for March 18.
The proceedings stem from revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court order that upheld their conviction in the cheque bounce cases.
During the legal proceedings, several members of the film industry, including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, David Dhawan, Sonu Sood, Guru Randhawa and Mika Singh, reportedly extended financial support. His wife, Radha Yadav, acknowledged the assistance during this challenging period.
On the professional front, Rajpal Yadav was last seen in Baby John and is set to feature next in Bhoot Bangla alongside Akshay Kumar, which is slated for release on April 10.
