Rahul Gandhi’s Support of Trump’s “Dead Economy” Remark Sparks Backlash

New Delhi:
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of former US President Donald Trump’s “dead economy” remark about India has drawn criticism from within his own party and allies, while giving the BJP a chance to hit back politically.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, claimed he “doesn’t care” about India’s ties with Russia, stating, “They can take their dead economies down together.” This came a day after the US announced 25% tariffs on Indian imports.

Rahul Gandhi echoed Trump’s comment, blaming the Modi government for India’s economic troubles. He cited demonetisation, GST, and the decline of MSMEs, saying the Prime Minister and Finance Minister are in denial about the country’s economic condition.

However, senior Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Rajiv Shukla distanced themselves from Trump’s statement. Tharoor emphasized the strength of India’s domestic market and suggested the country should look beyond the US if trade talks falter. Shukla called Trump’s comments “delusional” and said India’s economy is far from weak.

Opposition MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also rejected Trump’s claim, calling it a result of “arrogance or ignorance.” She acknowledged India’s economic challenges but said they do not amount to a “dead economy.”

The BJP seized the moment, with party leader Amit Malviya accusing Rahul Gandhi of “insulting” India and its people by aligning with foreign criticism. He asserted that India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy, recognized globally despite a challenging economic climate.

BJP’s K. Annamalai contrasted Tharoor’s and Gandhi’s remarks, praising Tharoor for defending India’s interests while accusing Gandhi of siding with “foreign voices” that undermine the country.
