Rahul Gandhi To Fund Education of 22 Children Orphaned in Pakistan Shelling During Operation Sindoor

Rajouri/Jammu:
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has pledged to fund the education of 22 children who lost one or both parents in Pakistani shelling during Operation Sindoor along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, a senior party official confirmed.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra said Mr. Gandhi had personally instructed the party to compile a list of school-going children who lost parents—particularly primary earners—due to cross-border shelling that took place between May 7 and 10.

“Following Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Poonch after the shelling, he met with the grieving families and directed us to identify affected children. We submitted a list of 22 such students from the Poonch district alone,” Karra said during a press briefing on Monday, while on a three-day tour of the region. He added that the number may increase as the visit continues.

According to Karra, 13 of the 28 civilian fatalities during Pakistani shelling and drone strikes in May occurred in Poonch alone. The attacks were reportedly in response to India’s Operation Sindoor, which involved missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

Karra said he would personally distribute financial assistance on Tuesday, sent by the Leader of Opposition, to support the education of affected children.

“This effort is to ensure that their academic progress doesn’t suffer due to this tragedy,” he said.

He also addressed political concerns, stating that there were no tensions between Congress and the National Conference (NC), but mentioned that the party had been waiting for the formation of a coordination committee with its ally for the past nine months.
