Rahul Gandhi Accuses PM Modi of Wanting to Dismiss the Constitution, Claims Opposition’s Fight Forced a Bow to It

Speaking at the ‘Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan,’ Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi once wished to discard the Constitution but was compelled to honor it after the BJP’s disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections. Mimicking the Prime Minister during his speech, Gandhi evoked laughter from the audience as he dramatized the PM’s entry into Parliament following a third-term victory.

Gandhi claimed that the BJP’s inability to secure over 400 seats, despite earlier boasts, forced the party to reconsider its stance on the Constitution. He highlighted how opposition parties, united under the INDIA bloc, had raised concerns about threats to the Constitution, resonating with Dalits and backward classes who felt their rights, like reservations, were at risk.

The event brought together speakers from diverse backgrounds, including former NDA allies like ex-MP Ali Anwar, who advocated for Pasmanda Muslims, and Bhagirath Manjhi, son of Dashrath Manjhi—the “mountain man.” Gandhi emphasized that the Constitution is a legacy of progressive ideas, drawing connections to figures like Buddha, Ambedkar, Narayana Guru, and Mahatma Phule.

The Congress leader’s remarks underscored the continuing debate over constitutional values in India’s political landscape.
