Priya Sachdev Kapur: The Woman at the Heart of a ₹30,000 Crore Business Empire Dispute

Priya Sachdev Kapur, the wife of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has found herself at the center of a major inheritance and control battle over the ₹30,000-crore Sona Group empire. Tensions flared on July 25 after Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother, sent a letter to the company’s board just ahead of its annual general meeting, alleging manipulation and forced signatures following her son’s sudden death.

Rani Kapur claimed she was the majority shareholder in the group and said she was made to sign various documents without understanding their implications. While she did not name anyone directly, the letter appeared to target Priya Sachdev Kapur, implying that certain individuals were misrepresenting the family.

Who Is Priya Sachdev Kapur?

Priya comes from a well-known Delhi-based business family. She is the daughter of automobile dealer Ashok Sachdev and holds a degree in Mathematics and Business Management from University College London (UCL), with a short stint at UCLA.

Initially gaining public attention as a model and making a brief Bollywood appearance in the 2005 film Neal ‘n’ Nikki, Priya transitioned into finance and business. Her career began in mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse First Boston in London, later returning to India to head ventures in auto retail, insurance, fashion, and e-commerce.

She founded TSG International Marketing Pvt. Ltd. and co-founded Rock N Shop, one of India’s early luxury e-commerce platforms. Today, she serves as a non-executive director at Sona Comstar and director at Aureus Investment, the Kapur family’s investment arm. She also leads the family’s polo team, Aureus Polo, founded by her late husband.

Personal Life and Public Spotlight

Priya was previously married to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal. Their marriage ended in 2011 following a prolonged custody battle over their daughter, which Priya won. She married Sunjay Kapur—ex-husband of actress Karisma Kapoor—in 2017. The couple has a son, Azarias.

Sunjay Kapur tragically died of a heart attack on June 12 during a polo match in England. Since his passing, Priya has been thrust into the public eye once again, this time over the future of the Sona Group.

As the dispute over the conglomerate’s control escalates, Priya Sachdev Kapur may soon find herself engaged in a complex legal and corporate battle—one that could shape the future of one of India’s top automobile groups.
