PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan Pension Scheme: What You Need to Know About Eligibility, Payouts, and What Happens If a Beneficiary Passes Away

The PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) is a government-backed pension scheme designed to provide old-age security for unorganised workers, such as street vendors, domestic workers, and rickshaw pullers. Launched on 26th August 2021, this initiative aims to protect senior citizens who lack access to formal social security schemes.
How Does PM-SYM Work?
The scheme offers a minimum pension of Rs 3,000 per month once the beneficiary reaches the age of 60. It’s available to workers aged 18 to 40 with a monthly income of Rs 15,000 or less. Those in the organised sector or paying income tax are not eligible.
What Happens If the Beneficiary Passes Away?
If the Beneficiary Dies: The spouse can either continue the scheme by making regular contributions or choose to exit and receive all contributions made, along with accumulated interest.
If Both the Beneficiary and Spouse Pass Away: The entire corpus accumulated under the scheme is returned to the scheme’s fund.
Permanent Disability Before Age 60: In case of permanent disability, the spouse can continue the scheme or withdraw the accumulated contributions with interest, whichever amount is higher.
Family Pension: If the beneficiary passes away, the spouse will receive 50% of the pension amount as a family pension.

e-Shram: A Comprehensive Platform for Unorganised Workers
On 21st October 2024, the government launched e-Shram, an integrated platform for unorganised workers, connecting 12 Central government schemes, including PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and MGNREGA. As of 28th January 2025, over 30.58 crore unorganised workers have registered on the portal.
Why Is PM-SYM Important?
Many unorganised workers are excluded from formal social security schemes, making them vulnerable to financial uncertainties. PM-SYM ensures that these workers have a reliable source of income during their old age, bringing them under a structured social security framework.
This pension scheme is a crucial step towards providing financial security and dignity to millions of unorganised workers across India.
