PM Modi Speaks With Netanyahu, Urges Peace Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Tensions

In a high-level diplomatic exchange, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday following Israel’s recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities under “Operation Rising Lion.” The strikes, which marked a significant escalation in the region, have raised global concerns over the potential for broader conflict.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared,
“Received a phone call from PM @netanyahu of Israel. He briefed me on the evolving situation. I shared India’s concerns and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region.”
Israel’s operation reportedly killed several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Gen. Hossein Salami, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. The strikes also targeted scientists linked to Iran’s nuclear programme, prompting outrage from Tehran.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs earlier issued a statement expressing deep concern over the developments.
“We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards de-escalation,” the statement read. India also reiterated its strong bilateral relations with both Iran and Israel and offered support for peace initiatives.
Indian citizens in the region have been advised to remain cautious and follow local security guidelines.
According to Israeli government sources, Netanyahu also reached out to other world leaders, including the German Chancellor and French President, seeking diplomatic backing amid mounting regional volatility. Conversations with leaders from the US, UK, and Russia are reportedly expected soon.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the attacks were “precise, preemptive strikes” intended to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
“The Iranian regime has long threatened Israel’s existence. These strikes aim to prevent them from acquiring a nuclear weapon imminently,” said IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin.
Iran, however, has responded with fury. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the strikes and warned of “severe punishment” for what he called a “crime” committed by Israel.
As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, India’s call for restraint and peaceful resolution underscores its delicate diplomatic position between two of its long-standing international partners.
