PM Modi Lands in Sri Lanka, Aims to Deepen Friendship and Strengthen Ties

Colombo:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday evening for a three-day visit, marking a significant step towards deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. His visit follows a productive trip to Bangkok, where he attended the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) summit.
During his stay, PM Modi is set to hold comprehensive discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday. Their talks are expected to focus on enhancing collaboration in key sectors such as energy, defence, trade, digitalisation, and regional connectivity.
Sources suggest that the two countries are likely to announce around ten major outcomes from the visit, signalling progress in strategic areas like energy security and digital partnerships.
This visit comes at a time when Sri Lanka is gradually recovering from a deep economic crisis it faced three years ago. India played a crucial role in supporting its neighbour during that period by extending financial assistance of USD 4.5 billion.
Ahead of the tour, PM Modi said, “We will have the opportunity to review progress made on the joint vision of ‘Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future’ and provide further guidance to realise our shared objectives.” This vision was jointly adopted during the Sri Lankan president’s visit to New Delhi three months ago.
PM Modi’s presence in Colombo underscores India’s commitment to nurturing regional partnerships and supporting Sri Lanka’s path to recovery and growth.
