PM Modi Congratulates Justice Sanjiv Khanna as He Takes Oath as 51st Chief Justice of India

On Monday, Justice Sanjiv Khanna took the oath of office as the 51st Chief Justice of India, marking the beginning of his short tenure at the top of the judiciary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the new CJI, attending the oath-taking ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. The ceremony was also witnessed by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and several senior government officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Khanna at 10 am. He will serve as CJI for just over six months, until his retirement on May 13, 2025.

Later that day, CJI Khanna, who has been a Supreme Court judge since January 2019, commenced judicial proceedings. He thanked the legal community for their warm wishes and, alongside Justice Sanjay Kumar, presided over proceedings in courtroom one. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi wished him a successful tenure, emphasizing the importance of the moment for the judiciary.

Justice Khanna’s distinguished career includes being part of several landmark rulings, such as the scrapping of the electoral bonds scheme, upholding the sanctity of EVMs, and the abrogation of Article 370. Hailing from a prestigious legal family, he is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and the nephew of former Supreme Court judge H.R. Khanna. Known for his commitment to reducing judicial pendency, Justice Khanna’s appointment marks a significant moment for the Indian judiciary as he begins this pivotal role.
