PM Modi Announces 8th Pay Commission: A Step Toward Better Lives for Govt Employees and Pensioners

In a significant move affecting over one crore people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. This initiative aims to revise the salaries of nearly 50 lakh central government employees and the allowances of around 65 lakh pensioners.
Announcing the decision, PM Modi shared his thoughts on the impact of the Pay Commission. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its employees. “We are all proud of the efforts of all government employees who work to build a Viksit Bharat. The Cabinet’s decision on the 8th Pay Commission will improve quality of life and boost consumption,” he stated.
The Prime Minister’s message also carried an implicit call for dedication, urging government employees to continue contributing toward the nation’s development.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that the process to establish the 8th Pay Commission will commence in 2025, ensuring that its recommendations are ready before the current 7th Pay Commission’s term ends in 2026. The 7th Pay Commission, constituted in 2014, had its recommendations implemented from January 1, 2016.
Pay Commissions are critical in shaping the salary structures, benefits, and allowances for government employees. Their recommendations are also often adopted by state-owned organizations, amplifying their impact.
With this announcement, the government is laying the groundwork to ensure a smooth transition and timely implementation of the new pay scales. The move is expected to not only uplift the standard of living for millions of employees and pensioners but also stimulate economic consumption, reinforcing India’s growth trajectory.
