PCB Imposes Ban on Use of ‘Pakistan’ Name in Private Cricket Leagues After WCL Controversy

In the wake of the controversy surrounding the World Championships of Legends (WCL) 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a firm stance by banning the use of the country’s name in teams participating in private cricket leagues. The decision comes after Indian players reportedly refused to play against the “Pakistan Champions” twice during the tournament, creating widespread controversy.

As per a report by Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net), the PCB decided to act following concerns that the WCL was being portrayed as a high-stakes clash between India and Pakistan, despite being a privately run league. The decision was made during a Board of Directors meeting held on Thursday.

“High-level officials were of the view that India’s refusal to play Pakistan in such events not only disrespects the sporting spirit but also tarnishes the country’s image,” sources told Telecom Asia.

Going forward, no private organization will be permitted to use the name ‘Pakistan’ in any cricket team or event without official PCB approval. Legal action will be taken against violators. The PCB emphasized that it retains exclusive rights to authorize use of the national name, contingent on verifying the legitimacy and reputation of the league or organization.

While the ongoing “Pakistan Legends” team will be allowed to compete in the WCL final against South Africa, all future approvals are now subject to stricter scrutiny.

Additionally, the Pakistan government and the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) committee—which oversees national sports matters—have reportedly issued an advisory to the PCB, urging tighter control over the use of the country’s name in unofficial cricket leagues.
