Passengers Scream as IndiGo Flight Faces Violent Turbulence Amid Delhi Storm

New Delhi – What was supposed to be a routine flight from Delhi to Srinagar turned into a nightmare for over 200 passengers onboard IndiGo flight 6E2142, as the aircraft was violently shaken midair after flying into a sudden hailstorm on Wednesday evening.

A viral video from inside the cabin captured the raw fear of passengers — adults and children alike could be heard screaming and crying as the aircraft was tossed around by the storm. Lightning flashed through the windows, adding to the already terrifying atmosphere.

According to officials, the flight, carrying 227 passengers, encountered the extreme turbulence unexpectedly. The situation became so intense that the pilot had to declare an emergency to Air Traffic Control in Srinagar.

Thankfully, the flight landed safely at 6:30 PM, and no injuries were reported. IndiGo confirmed in a statement that the crew followed all safety protocols during the incident and that the well-being of passengers was prioritized upon landing.

Photos circulated online showed that a portion of the aircraft’s nose cone had been damaged, likely due to hail impact. The airline stated the aircraft would undergo inspection and maintenance before returning to service.

The turbulent flight coincided with a powerful storm that swept across Delhi-NCR, bringing winds up to 79 km/h, heavy rain, and widespread disruptions. Flights were delayed at Delhi airport, Metro services on the Yellow Line were halted, and parts of Noida and Delhi saw fallen trees, shattered windows, and traffic chaos.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm was triggered by a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and an east-west trough stretching from Punjab to Bangladesh. Moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal fed into the system, intensifying the weather event.

Ironically, this dramatic weather shift came just hours after Delhi endured a sweltering heatwave, with a “feels-like” temperature of 50.2°C earlier in the day.
