Over 50 Dead In Tragic Bus Collision in Western Afghanistan

Kabul — More than 50 people were killed in western Afghanistan on Tuesday after a passenger bus collided with a truck and a motorcycle, local police and officials have confirmed.
According to Herat police, the crash took place in the Guzara district outside Herat city and was caused by “excessive speed and driver negligence.”
The bus was transporting Afghan migrants who had recently returned from Iran and were on their way to the capital, Kabul. Provincial official Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi said all of the passengers had boarded the vehicle at the Islam Qala border crossing, a major point of entry for returnees from Iran.
Saeedi added that most of the fatalities were bus passengers. Two people travelling in the truck and two on the motorcycle were also killed.
Afghanistan has seen a significant increase in people deported or forced to leave Iran in recent months, resulting in heavy traffic on routes connecting the western border to Kabul.
Deadly road accidents are unfortunately common in Afghanistan, where poor road conditions, lack of traffic enforcement and reckless driving frequently lead to tragedy. Last December, at least 52 people were killed in two separate bus accidents on a highway in central Afghanistan.
