Over 30 Arrested for Attempting to Incite Communal Violence in Assam’s Dhubri

Guwahati:
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that more than 30 individuals have been arrested in connection with a recent incident in Dhubri, where a cow’s head was discovered in a communally sensitive area, triggering unrest. Additionally, five people were detained in Lakhimpur district for similar acts.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, Mr. Sarma said, “Over 30 arrests have been made in the Dhubri incident. In Lakhimpur, five people were taken into custody after three cows’ heads were found placed near a Namghar (a Vaishnavite prayer hall). The police have launched further action. It’s a serious matter, but I am confident it will be brought under control within a day or two.”

The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to criticize Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, attributing the incidents to what he described as Gandhi’s “mentality.”

“Only members of a certain community would store beef in such a way. This is Rahul Gandhi’s mentality. If a Hindu were to store meat, it would be pork, not beef. His mindset is toxic,” Mr. Sarma stated.

These comments have drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who accused the Chief Minister of making divisive and inflammatory remarks during a volatile time.

Following the unrest, police issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri last week to maintain order.

Earlier, Mr. Sarma claimed that a pro-Bangladesh group called Nobin Bangla was responsible for putting up provocative posters in Dhubri, suggesting the district should be part of Bangladesh. “These posters indicate the presence of a communal group backed by Bangladesh working to destabilize the region,” he said.

He also alleged the emergence of a “new beef mafia” in Dhubri, claiming that thousands of cattle were procured in the area just ahead of Eid al-Adha.
