“Non-Bailable Warrant Issued Against Rahul Gandhi Over 2018 Remark on Amit Shah”

A Jharkhand court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a defamation case stemming from comments he allegedly made in 2018. The MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa has directed Gandhi to appear in person on June 26.

The case originated from a Congress party event where Rahul Gandhi is accused of making a remark suggesting that no “murderer” could become the Congress president, implying this could happen only in the BJP. The complaint, filed by Chaibasa resident Pratap Katiyar, argued the statement was a direct attack on then-BJP President Amit Shah.

Initially, the court issued a bailable warrant in April 2022 due to lack of response from Gandhi. After continued absence, it escalated to a non-bailable warrant in February 2024. Despite his legal team’s efforts to seek exemption, the court rejected the plea, and although the Jharkhand High Court had provided temporary relief, it disposed of the petition in March 2024.

Since then, the lower court has resumed proceedings, maintaining its demand for Gandhi’s physical appearance. A separate defamation case is also ongoing against Gandhi in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, related to similar remarks. He had last appeared there in July 2023. A scheduled hearing in May 2025 was postponed due to a legal workshop.
