NIA Cracks Down on Cross-Border Human Trafficking Syndicate, Raids 22 Locations Across Six States

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a massive operation on Thursday, raiding 22 locations across six states as part of an investigation into an organised human trafficking syndicate. The network is accused of luring young Indians with promises of lucrative jobs abroad, only to exploit them in overseas call centres involved in cyber fraud.

Widespread Raids Across India

Raids were conducted at the premises of 17 suspects in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Punjab. These individuals, identified as sub-agents, associates, and relatives of Cambodia-based Indian traffickers, are accused of facilitating the trafficking of job-seeking youth to Southeast Asian countries.

Disturbing Findings

During the operation, the NIA seized mobile phones, hard drives, memory cards, laptops, incriminating documents, and Rs 34,80,800 in cash. Investigators discovered that the trafficked youth were subjected to severe exploitation. Their passports were confiscated, and they were forced to work in “scam companies” that operated cyber fraud schemes.

Tales of Abuse

Statements from victims painted a grim picture of their ordeal. They reported instances of mental and physical torture, including electric shocks, inflicted by managers of these scam companies for refusing to participate in fraudulent activities.

Origin of the Case

The investigation began with the Bihar police, who uncovered a larger cross-border trafficking network. Recognising the international dimensions of the case, the matter was handed over to the NIA.

The NIA continues to investigate the syndicate, aiming to dismantle the network and bring justice to the victims of this horrific exploitation.
