Mumbai Police on Alert After Hoax Email Threatens Bomb Blasts at Airport and Taj Hotel

Mumbai police were thrown into high alert on Friday morning after receiving an email threatening bomb attacks at two of the city’s most iconic locations — the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Fortunately, after extensive security checks, the threat was declared a hoax.

The alarming message was sent to the official email address of the Airport Police Station. It claimed that seven RDX-based IEDs had been planted at the airport and the Taj Hotel, urging immediate evacuation. The email chillingly referenced a “devastating pipe bomb blast” in memory of Afzal Guru and Savukku Shankar, linking the message to a political motive.

Police teams swiftly launched search operations at both the airport and the Taj Hotel, located in Mumbai’s Santacruz and Colaba areas respectively. Sniffer dogs, bomb detection squads, and multiple law enforcement units were deployed. After thorough checks, no suspicious items or explosives were found.

“This appears to be a hoax, but we are treating it with utmost seriousness,” said a senior police official involved in the investigation.

A case has been registered under charges of criminal intimidation, public mischief, and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sender remains unidentified, and cyber experts are now working to trace the origin of the email.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of high-profile public spaces and the challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with digitally-driven threats, even when they turn out to be false alarms.
