Massive Weapons Haul in West Bengal: One Arrested With 16 Firearms and 904 Bullets

A major arms seizure was made on Monday in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, where police recovered a huge cache of weapons and ammunition from an apartment in Rahara, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata.

According to senior officials, the Detective Department of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate arrested Madhusudan Mukherjee, who was allegedly occupying the flat. The raid led to the recovery of 16 firearms, 904 rounds of ammunition, approximately ₹1 lakh in cash, 248 grams of gold, and over 10 kg of antique coins, whose valuation is currently underway.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department), Charu Sharma, provided details on the seized weapons, which included:

  • 5 long guns
  • 1 pump-action shotgun
  • 1 bolt-action rifle
  • 2 double-barrel rifles
  • 1 single-barrel rifle
  • 9 smaller firearms, including:
    • 1 9mm pistol
    • 2 7mm pistols
    • 3 revolvers
    • 3 single-shot pistols

The flat also contained several machines, which police suspect were used for repairing or modifying firearms.

Mukherjee had been living in a ground-floor apartment in Rahara’s Regent Park area, around 15 km from Kolkata, under the guise of being a cloth merchant. Police believe he was actively involved in arms procurement and distribution.

Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the weapons and their intended recipients. Authorities also revealed that Mukherjee has a criminal background — he was previously arrested in 2006 under the Arms Act and NDPS Act in the Khardah police station area and reportedly drove hired police vehicles in Bardhaman earlier.
