Massive Fireball as Small Aircraft Crashes at London Southend Airport

London:
Emergency responders rushed to London Southend Airport on Sunday following the crash of a small aircraft, triggering a massive fireball and thick smoke visible from the area.
The airport confirmed on social media that a “serious incident” had taken place involving a general aviation aircraft. Photos and videos from the scene showed intense flames and black smoke billowing from the crash site. The aircraft involved is reported to be about 12 meters (approximately 39 feet) in length.
Eyewitness John Johnson, who was at the airport with his family, described the harrowing moment the plane went down. “It took off and within a few seconds started banking sharply to the left,” he said. “It flipped nearly upside down and crashed nose-first into the ground. A huge fireball followed.”
Johnson noted that airport fire crews were on the scene almost immediately, with two fire engines quickly dispatched. They were soon joined by local police, ambulances, and additional fire services.
Essex Police confirmed receiving reports of the crash shortly before 4 p.m. local time. The airport, situated roughly 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of central London, is smaller compared to the city’s main international hubs.
Authorities have not yet released details about the aircraft’s intended destination or the number of passengers on board. Investigations are ongoing.
As a safety measure, nearby facilities including a local golf and rugby club were evacuated.
Local Member of Parliament David Burton-Sampson urged the public to avoid the area and allow emergency services to carry out their duties. “My thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” he said.
Due to the crash, the airport’s website indicated that at least four outgoing flights scheduled for Sunday afternoon were cancelled.
